Gurgaon: various development activities such as construction of master roads, rapid metro rail project have taken a heavy toll on the trees of the city.
Although many trees were uprooted for transplantation, this did not take place owing lack of technical know-how on the part of the agency hired for the work.
The forest department has issued notices to Gurgaon RapidMetro Rail Ltd, the consortium, for “recklessness handling” of trees for transplant.
Although Huda has transplanted 30 trees out of the 87 which were uprooted from the master road project near village Kherki Dhaula, Besides, 30 trees from the Jaipur Highway near Haldirams were also transplanted at a bio-diversity park.
Huda administrator, Nitin K Yadav said he wasn’t aware that 57 trees were chopped.
The district forest officer said the department had given the permission to Huda to cut those trees only on the condition that they should be transplanted properly.
The forest department in its letter said; “The transplantation should be done very carefully and if one tree dies the Huda department will have to plant 10 trees to compensate that one tree,” A total of 60 trees transplanted out of the 90 uprooted from the rapid metro project died due to lack of expertise. Devinder Rao, Range Forest Officer said: “None of the trees transplanted survived.
One of the conditions of the transplant was that the whole process should be done in my presence but the company claimed that the work was done by experts.”
